This recipe was created by Jean Schwirtz of Waupaca, Wisconsin. It was the winner at the Waupaca Book Festival in 2011, where Friendship Bread Kitchen founder, Darien Gee, and her novel, Friendship Bread, was being honored. Head librarian Peg Burington hosted an Amish Friendship Bread recipe contest, and while there were so many wonderful entries, this one was stood out. It wasn’t just creative, but absolutely delicious.
Jean used locally-sourced potato chips which we appreciated. It gave the Amish Friendship Bread a delightful, sweet-and-salty crunch, inside and out. Any kettle-style potato chips would work, and this might inspire you to try other creative add-ins with the bread. Pretzels? Chex mix? Cereal? Corn chips? (We might have to draw the line on that one!) But you get the picture.
We’d love to hear if you’d try this recipe, or if you have some other savory creative add-in you’d recommend. What do you think?

Hello,
Yes, I would definitely try this recipe and instead of regular potatoe chips, I would use (if I could find them) UTZ Kettle Classic gourmet Dark Russets. Oh so evil and good!
Beverly says
I believe I would be inclined to try other recipes before this one. I’m sure it is good, however I prefer my chips with dip, not in baked goods.
Wendy says
Something to try when I’ve got some bag-ends of potato chips. Since I’m just starting with AFB starters, it might be a while before I get to it. The 12-days post had a commenter that didn’t want to be eating potatoes, and that got me wondering. Anybody try it with sweet potato chips?
Karen K. says
Hmm. I’d have to think about this one! Not sure I would like it.
Holly Hill says
I’m not sure but I might try this. I wonder if it would be good with French fried onions on top for the savory.

I love this recipe idea. I probably would stick with the salted flavor as opposed to something like barbecue or sour cream and onion. The sweet and savory contrast would be great, with the added crunch.
Brenda Haines says
I would definitely try it!

I have not tried it but it looks great! and maybe nuts!
Ann Thompson says
Hmmm, I’m going to have to think about this one. I like crunchy things, but I think I would prefer potato chips on something like your garlic onion bread (which is Delicious BTW!) Sweet/salty isn’t usually my first choice.
But you know what, I have an open mind, so before I pass final judgement, I will try it first!
Brenda Higgins says
I think I will pass on this one.
Debi Baker says
My kids might like this, but I think I would like it better with crispy bacon as a topping.,
Amber Underwood says
Yes..love salty things!!
Erica Mueller says
I’ll pass on this. If I want crunch, I add nut, which have protein and boost satiety. Potato chips only add starch and salt.
Ellie Z says
My Grandmother made potato chip cookies in the 60’s. Nice flashback. This is something I would like to try.
Cindy Peterson says
I am not certain I would try this as I tried another recipe that added potato chips in eggs and I was not a fan. But on the other hand, salty, crispy topping does look good.
