This month’s giveaway winner for a bamboo cookbook stand is Elaine Vnuk!
Congratulations, Elaine!
This Amish Friendship Bread Blondies recipe is warm and buttery, caramel-y, and as soon as the kids get home, these treats will disappear!
Revamped, revised, updated, perfected!
Brownie lovers, look out. The competition has arrived.
This Amish Friendship Bread variation has a buttery, caramel flavor with just the right amount of sweetness. I made them right around lunchtime and as soon as the kids got home, these treats disappeared. Even my die-hard-chocolate-lover kid polished off two!
I added a ½ cup of white chocolate chips and another ½ cup of toffee bits for extra flavor and crunch. If desired, ½ cup nuts can be mixed in, sprinkled on the bottom and/or added to the top before baking.

I’m having issues with Blondies. The first time made they fell-this time I added 1/2cup more flour, they still fell. Great flavor, pretty moist & chewy, just not a fan of them falling! Would live any suggestions!!
I have a question for Amish Bread bakers. I mistakenly purchased some sugar free instant pudding, can I still use it in the recipe for original bread-any modification needed?
These were so delicious! I have celiac disease, so I can’t have flour. I adapted my gluten-free sourdough starter to a gluten-free AFB starter, which performs perfectly. In case there are other GF folks out there with a GF AFB starter, you can use this recipe to make the blondies. Just substitute the all-purpose flour with Bob’s Red Mill 1-to-1 GF flour, and increase the baking soda to 1 tsp and baking powder to 2 tsp. The baking time will need to increase by about 10 minutes (so, bake for a full hour, instead of the 50 min written above). Everything will turn out scrumptious! Thank you for posting this recipe!
Hi Jani! Thanks so much for sharing your tips. That sounds delicious! We love it when people can adjust the recipes to their needs! Happy baking! ❤️
This is delicious! I substituted butterscotch chips for the toffee chips and only used 1 small box of french vanilla pudding. Pecans added a nice touch. I omitted the sugar dusting to the pan. Nice sweet dessert. Family loved this!
So glad you and your family enjoyed these, Carol! If you took any pictures, we’d love to see them on our group Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/amishfriendshipbread
I’m not sure what happened with this recipe, but it didn’t come out at all. I followed it exactly with no substitutions, but it never fully cooked in the middle. So it’s burned on the bottom and edges and a mushy mess in the center.
Hi Andrea! It’s always such a bummer when a recipe doesn’t work out. We’ve made this several times — what size pan did you use?
These look so good. Perfect for our holiday party.
I would love to try these blondes! we love blondes and I bet these are awesome!
I would add toasted coconut but I’m definitely a blondie lover.
I’m so glad to have another yummy recipe to make! It’s great! Thank you!
Definitely going to try this one. Haven’t had a recipe from AFBK that wasn’t a hit.
Might try some peanut butter chips.
I generally prefer brownies though these sound delicious! I would probably use walnuts and add craziness to them. Yummy!
Since I haven’t made these yet I’m not sure if I’m a Blondie or brownie! I would assume a Blondie because I absolutely love white chocolate so I will probably do white chocolate and maybe add almonds to it. Can’t wait to try it!
I haven’t made this yet but can’t wait to try it. My 3 yr old daughter and 5 yr old son love helping Mommy make things in the kitchen so I am really looking forward to this one!
Usually a brownie girl but blondies are fantastic too. I am just making the starter today, so I can’t wait to be able to make super yummy Blondies. I love coconut, so I’m wondering how that would be, maybe with slivered almonds. Also curious about zucchini? Has anyone tried that? Ooohhh I can’t wait! All the possibilities!!?
I prefer blondies- peanut butter chips sound good as a option. Will try soon
I love brownies but my kids love blondies
I am not able to eat much chocolate due to my gallbladder being taken out a few years back. (I know strange!) so i am very excited to try these. i plan to add nuts, toffee bits, and maybe a little dark chocolate bits – a little! thanks for the great recipes!
I like both, but I guess I say brownies are my favorite. And I’d like to try peanut butter chips, or butterscotch chips the next time I bake some blondies, or even in brownies.
I love brownies with fudge icing and lots and lots of walnuts!
Brownies… but made Blondies with browned butter… oh my.
Blondies…..brownies…..how is a girl to choose? I will try these when my starter is ready. Thanks for all the great recipes:)
Actually I like both!!
I might add a little coconut to the batter.
I prefer brownies over blondies. If I made these anyway, I’d add a dash of cardamom.
Brownie fan here but will try these.
I love both brownies and blondies. I would add butterscotch chips to the blondie recipe.
I’m allergic to chocolate, so blondies for me! I really like the idea of the toffee in these. I sometimes make pecan pie blondies that are delicious, too.
First choice for me is a Brownie, but these Blondies are now a must-try!! I think I would add peanut butter chips along with all the add-ins you used! 😀
I like both but I would add any kind of nuts to this recipe
I’m a Blondie and am making this recipe for my Bday for my friends and family to enjoy….
I might make 2 batches one regular recipe and the other with raisins……..
Haven’t made this recipe yet but I will. Looks perfect for a get together this weekend.
yes me too need to try this recipe smiles
I usually like brownies better but I could be swayed , I would add dried cherries 🙂
I love a good chewie, moist brownie! But both are good with a nice hot cup of coffee. Might try this with marbled effects, with marshmallow crème. So good!
Wonderful flavor. I added 1/4 cup extra toffee chips.
I want to try cranberries in the blondies. Yum.
I am a “BLONDIE” fan! love them with good ole chocolate chips. One of life’s simple pleasures
I am a brownie person but I do also enjoy blondies. I have not tried this recipe yet but if it is as fantastic as the AFB Brownies it will be very popular with my family. I would try adding some chocolate chips for just a hint of chocolate.
Wow! These sound amazing, Elaine. If you get a picture of your Amish Friendship Bread creations, we’d love to see them. You can upload them here!
They are delicious and the smell in our home is decadent. My favorite treat! A cup of coffee on the back patio, with one of these blondies. Heavenly!
I would make this for my husband and our son.
I would make this for my coworkers and my friend Julie.
Will make for hubby and sister
Can’t wait to try this.
My husband & I are currently on vacation, & I have place this on my smart phone calendar, to try when we get home.
I made these with 1 box butterscotch pudding, 1 box vanilla pudding and 1 cup butterscotch chips and they were delicious! My family loved them!
My boys loved them so much I just stuck my second batch in the oven!
I’m usually a brownie person, not Blondie’s. To this I might add dried cherries, possibly soaked in rum.
Made these today, only I split the batter between 2 – 11×7 pans and added 12 ounces of white baking chips. Just took the pans out of the oven!
Hi Angel — you certainly can. You can also exclude it if necessary (i.e. if you are making a non-chocolate recipe and don’t want a chocolate flavor) or make vanilla pudding from scratch. Here’s our recipe:
