This Dark Chocolate Amish Friendship Bread was one of our first Friendship Bread Kitchen recipes back in 2009. It’s similar to our Double Chocolate Amish Friendship Bread and Triple Chocolate Amish Friendship Bread variations, but amps up the chocolate love with a twist: dark chocolate chips, dark chocolate cocoa, and 1 small box of chocolate fudge pudding.

I am just wondering if you could use this recipe with the “No Starter (Starter Free) Amish Friendship Bread recipe from the Friendship Bread Kitchen by substituting the vanilla pudding with the chocolate and adding the chocolate chips and the cocoa powder and eliminating the nuts and raisins.
Rebekah says
Hi Geri! We haven’t tried that before, so you’ll have to experiment, but that sounds like it should work. Let us know if you end up trying!

Ready to try. Love chocolate!

I have been dealing with the Amish Friendship starter for something like 35 years. The original recipe I received included 1 cup chopped apple. this is an important difference. It led to the versions I came up with like banana bread with 1 cup mashed banana and banana cream instant pudding. For the Chocolate fudgey bread, I include the chopped apple with chocolate instant pudding and chocolate chips.
Rebekah says
Wow, that’s amazing, June! Thanks for sharing your knowledge! Do you still have your original starter? We really love to hear stories like this. ❤️
flora says
Interesting. Does the apples make chunks or get soft baking?

It’s nice to stumble on your article. I’ll make this for mother’s day. I’m sure grandma will love this.
Rebekah says
So glad this recipe turned out for you, Carrie! It’s one of our favorites!

Elice Williams says
I made this as muffins with chocolate chips, and they were fantastic! One bag of chocolate chips, an extra tablespoon of cocoa powder, subsituted applesauce for oil, and baked for about 25 minutes. Great! Tree Trimming Thornton

So glad you enjoyed this recipe, Elice! That sounds so good with the applesauce.
Courtney Durham says
On the instant pudding mix, is it 1 or 2, 1/2, or 2 boxes? I see this 1-2 so is the second box optional? I ask because I only bought one small box of the instant pudding.
Darien Gee says
One box is fine, Courtney! It depends on personal preference — pudding boost moisture and flavor. I always recommend one small box to start, but many long-time Amish Friendship Bread bakers prefer two.

I will be making this for myself on Mother’s Day. No one else in my family can bake and since it also falls on my daughter’s birthday this year (she will be 6) I know I won’t be getting anything at all. I honestly probably won’t get to make it until the next day or so since she will be expecting the cake of her choice for me to bake (and rightfully so). Mother’s Day stopped being important to me a long time ago. I know we don’t have the money for gifts and my husband doesn’t do anything special. Just another day. Wow that comment went from positive to a real downer really quick. Sorry.
Sharon Pankratz says
I made this with 2 boxes of the Hershey’s special dark pudding. It was so moist and delicious. I would definitely make this again.

Great suggestion, Sharon! Thanks for sharing!

This is the most decadent recipe I have tried. Instead of using bread pans, I used my Bundt pan. Followed the directions as listed and it came out wonderful. My husband says this is his new favorite. The cocoa powder, chocolate pudding and the DARK chocolate chips is heavenly. This is definitely one of those recipes where I see myself making again and again and again. Thank You !!!!!
